In my area, Bethel brothers had the reputation of being players, stringing sisters along just to get "close" to them and then dump them because of course they had to focus on "Kingdom interests".
I remember hearing one joke go around that shows the common view of Bethelites...
A sister had a new baby and the CO came to visit. He said to her, "If you want to know what type of person your son will be when he grows up, just do this test. Put a Bible, a beer bottle and a doll out in front of him and see what he chooses to play with. If he chooses the Bible, he'll be a spiritual man. If he chooses the beer bottle, he'll be an Alcoholic. If he chooses the doll, he'll be a womanizer. If he chooses all three, he'll be a Bethelite!" :)

during my time as a witness i've known a few, and the amazing thing is that it really is quite true.
the two i really got to know both had problems, in fact they where much in the same personality wise.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE/WORST STUDY BOOK?
by badboy inwhich ones did you hate and which ones did you like out of the study books?

In agreement with many here, the Isaiah books were intolerable!
I enjoyed the "Draw Close to Jehovah" book, especially chapter 24 "Nothing Can Separate Us From God's Love". I felt the book was at least an attempt at helping people see their worth in the eyes of god. Too bad so little of it got put into practice by the elders and the congregation in general.

Are All Governing Body Members Created Equal?
by Gary1914 ini do not believe they are.. i think that some of the governing body members are sincere, god fearing men, who really believe the crap that they are dishing out to their members.
some of these men have been waiting for decades for paradise and refuse to give up on the idea that it will someday come.. on the other hand.
i believe that others on the governing body are actually evil.

"poor elderly brothers on the Governing Body" have to read all these accounts of people having sex toy parties and strippers at their bachelorette parties and playing spin the bottle and girls kissing girls and all this crazy sexual stuff, and how it was terrible that these elderly men had to read all this stuff "
Oh please, it's probably the only excitement these brothers get anymore. That's if they can even feel aroused at this point in their life.

Elder says no to congregation picnic: Brooklyn says no large gatherings
by truthseeker inour congregation has really gone down in recent months.
the friends don't talk to each other, there have been many disfellowshippings and jc's.. an elder i was talking to in the kh after the meeting says that "he and the other elders would like to have a congregation picnic but can't because bethel disapproves of large social gatherings.".
i looked at this elder and felt sorry for him - it was like hearing a child cry because mother wouldn't let him outside to play baseball.. the cong.

I wonder why an elder would even ask Brooklyn for permission to begin with?
We had all sorts of congregation picnics and parties. I was actually in charge of arranging one a couple of months before I started fading. It was a potluck dinner, dancing and karaoke party with a summer theme. Everyone dressed up in their summer wear.
There were games, face painting, skits and gifts for the kids. It was held in the party room of the PO's condominium. There was no alcohol and as I recall, there was no one breathing down my neck about keeping things under control. It was actually a really fun evening, almost "normal".

Hi Barbara,
I just read this and it's really fired me up. I'm going to send this to my father and see where it goes.
Perhaps you've already answered this but in the article (page 17 of the pdf) you mention an "intimidating circuit representative" who later became a Governing Body member who was mentionned in numerous letters as trying to quiet people who'd been abused. Who was this?
Thanks again for all of your hard work.

Elie Wiesel's visit to the German Death Camps with Oprah
by Lady Lee ini don't always watch oprah but happened by chance to hit the station yesterday.
it was a special limited advertizment program about the holocaust.
oprah and elie weisel went back to the concentration camp where he was senf during hitler's campaign to kill or enslave thousands and thousands of people.

I watched it too and spent the night in a deep state of "existential angst". Reflecting on the horrors of the Holocaust I can't help but wonder if society is any better today. We have allowed genocides to take place since then and each day people are enslaved to "cults" of many varieties. Elie Wiesel says he continues to speak about his experiences so that we will never forget what happened. The question is not whether we have forgotten, the question is what do we do with what we remember?

Welcome to the board marked. What a great story. It's amazing how music gets us thinking. Art is so cathartic really.
Thanks for sharing with us. I look forward to more of your posts. I'm from Toronto too btw. Maybe we'll meet at an upcoming Apostafest.
